Wedding rings may be small, but they carry so much meaning. On a wedding day, I love taking a little time to photograph them in a way that reflects the setting and the story of the day. Sometimes they’re surrounded by flowers or beautiful stationery, and other times I find unexpected textures like moss, greenery, or artwork around the venue. These small detail photos become part of the visual story of the wedding and often end up being some of the couple’s favorite images.

Creative Wedding Ring Displays

Sometimes the most creative detail photos happen in the quiet in-between moments of a wedding day. After finishing most of the getting-ready details, I noticed a chessboard in the room and thought it would make a fun and unexpected setting for the rings. My husband is a big chess enthusiast (he even works for chess.com), so I couldn’t resist styling the rings on the chess pieces for a quick photo. It ended up becoming one of my favorite ring shots from Brittany and Jake’s wedding.

While photographing the wedding details, I noticed this colorful landscape painting in the room and immediately loved the vibrant colors and texture. When I checked, I realized it was easy to carefully take down, so I gently moved it into the window light and placed the rings on the surface of the painting. The tiny painted mountains and sky created the illusion of a miniature landscape for the rings, turning a simple detail photo into something a little more artistic. It’s still one of my favorite ring photos I’ve ever created.

This couple planned a Lord of the Rings–inspired wedding and wanted their day to feel like a celebration in the Shire. They brought this beautiful ceremonial sword, complete with Elvish details, to incorporate into their wedding design. Since it was such a meaningful piece, I balanced the rings on the sword’s crossguard to create a detail photo that tied into the theme while still keeping the rings as the focus. Romantic Wedding Ring Photos

Sometimes the simplest details create the most meaningful images. These rings were photographed resting on the couple’s handwritten vows, capturing both the symbol of their marriage and the promises they made to one another that day. The soft focus draws attention to the words “forever and always,” which felt like the perfect sentiment to accompany the rings. Converting the image to black and white keeps the moment timeless and lets the emotion of the words take center stage.

Beautiful florals can make the perfect setting for wedding ring photos, especially when the flowers themselves are as stunning as this bouquet. The soft peonies and garden blooms were designed by Angie Lopez of Love and Flowers by Angie, a talented Monterey florist whose arrangements photograph beautifully. I gently placed the ring inside one of the peonies so the petals naturally framed the diamond, and the tiny droplets of moisture on the flower added an extra touch of texture and sparkle. With the soft window light coming through the room, the colors and delicate details of the bouquet created a romantic backdrop for this simple but elegant ring photo.

Wedding veils can create beautiful textures for ring photos, especially when the fabric has rich color and movement like this deep burgundy veil. Even though the getting-ready room was quite crowded that morning, I stepped outside for a moment and used one of the patio chairs to create a small, quiet setup for the rings. The soft folds of the veil and the deep color create a romantic backdrop that lets the diamonds stand out while still keeping the image simple and elegant.

Wedding Rings Styled with Invitations & Paper Details

Wedding stationery often tells the story of a couple’s journey toward their wedding day, and I love including those details in ring photos whenever possible. In this case, the rings were styled on the couple’s save-the-date card, which featured one of my favorite engagement photos from their session together. It’s always fun to see engagement images come full circle and become part of the wedding day itself. You can see more from their engagement session here.

Wedding stationery is always a beautiful element to incorporate into ring photos. For this image, I styled the rings on the couple’s vow book and used the soft ribbon from the bride’s details to add movement and texture to the composition. The bright rose petals were gathered from the garden just outside and placed around the book to bring in a little color and contrast. It’s a simple setup, but the combination of the delicate paper, soft ribbon, and vibrant petals creates a romantic and timeless detail photo.

Beautiful paper goods can elevate wedding detail photos in such a lovely way, and the stationery for this wedding was especially stunning. The envelope liner featured delicate artwork that created a soft, textured background for the rings, while pearls and florals added a classic bridal touch. I loved incorporating the paper design into this image so the rings felt connected to the overall aesthetic of the wedding. The gorgeous stationery was designed by Gianna of Aerialist Press, whose elegant paper goods made these detail photos even more special.

Nature Inspired Wedding Ring Photos

When I arrived at the home where the bride was getting ready, these beautiful succulents immediately caught my eye. Their perfect symmetry and rich green tones made them an ideal natural backdrop for the rings. I love incorporating elements from the environment whenever possible, and these plants created a simple but striking setting that highlights the rings while reflecting the relaxed, nature-inspired feel of the day. This wedding was a small pandemic-era celebration with just close family present, and you can see more from this intimate day in the full wedding story here.

I spotted this mossy fence nearby and decided to try it as another option for the ring photos. The soft texture of the moss made a perfect natural backdrop, and it was surprisingly helpful for keeping the rings in place. What started as a quick experiment ended up becoming one of my favorite shots—the rich greens and the little pop of blue from the stone just work beautifully together.

This couple had such a beautiful custom-made ring box, I just needed to find the right backdrop for it. I found this patch of greenery nearby and it worked perfectly—delicate enough to frame the rings without being too busy or distracting. The rich green tones also tied in beautifully with the setting, since the wedding itself took place in the redwood forest.

Wedding ring photos are often some of the smallest details from a wedding day, but they carry so much meaning. I love finding creative ways to photograph them using elements that are already part of the day—flowers, stationery, natural textures, and meaningful objects. These little moments of creativity help tell the full story of a wedding, and they often become some of the most loved images in a couple’s gallery.

Do we need to bring anything for ring photos?

You usually don’t need to bring anything special. Rings can be photographed beautifully with items that are already part of your wedding day, like your bouquet, invitations, vow books, or other meaningful details. If you do have something special—like a ring box, heirloom item, or decorative element—it can be fun to include, but it’s absolutely not required.

What details should we set aside for wedding photos?

A small “detail box” can be very helpful. Couples often include things like the rings, invitation suite, vow books, perfume, jewelry, heirlooms, ribbons, or special keepsakes. Florals and greenery from your bouquet or arrangements are also wonderful for styling detail photos.

When are ring photos usually taken on a wedding day?

Ring photos are typically taken during the getting-ready portion of the day, while hair and makeup are happening or before the ceremony begins. This allows time to style the rings creatively using the beautiful details you’ve chosen for your wedding.
